Winifred
13 years ago, my Grandmother passed away and until this project began, I knew very little about her and her life other than that she lived in the Scottish border town of Galashiels and that she had a skill for sewing. When I was younger, she would make me costumes to dress up in, Robin Hood or a character from Lord of the Rings, topped off with wooden swords which my farther would make me to complete my outfit. In her later years she resided at Corn Mill Court Care Home, just outside the centre of town, which I recently visited in January of 2019. It had been 13 years since I last laid eyes on her home and at first, I didn’t recognise the 70’s styled building with low brick wall and trim garden but memories of the place, and the town soon came flooding back. I remember coming to visit my Aunt and Uncle hear, playing computer games for hours on end with my cousin Peter and balancing on the curb outside my Grandma’s care home. Walking through the streets I was 7 years old again, a great feeling of nostalgia that I had long forgotten in my teenage years, I could see the faces of Ford, Emma and Grandma, however I was unable to put a name to the face. Growing up I would always call her “Scottish Gran”, too shy to ask for her name, it wasn’t until my last visit that I discovered her name was Winifred Renton.
